Volunteer Levels & Opportunities

Help keep the kennel safe, clean, and welcoming for both dogs and people. These shifts are a great way to get started and make an immediate impact.
• Weekly Tidy-Ups
Laundry, dishes, sweeping, and other small tasks that keep things running day to day.• Monthly Deep Clean
Group scrub of kennels, sanitizing common areas, and organizing supplies.• Quarterly Refresh Day
Seasonal projects like grounds care, storage resets, or enrichment builds. -
Build skills to safely handle, walk, and enrich our dogs’ lives. These shifts combine hands-on interaction with training to help dogs grow calm, confident, and well-mannered.
• Dog Walking 101, Handling & Enrichment Training
(Required before signing up for dog handling & enrichment shifts)Learn leash skills, brushing/handling, and enrichment basics (puzzle feeders, frozen treats, training games). Includes hands-on practice with staff support.
• Brushing & Handling Circles — Wednesdays 9–10 AM · 6–7 PM
Gentle brushing and light grooming to build comfort with handling. A calm group setting where you can connect with both dogs and fellow volunteers.• Weekend Walks
Start or end the day with exercise. Volunteers walk dogs individually or in pairs to build confidence and support good behavior.• Enrichment Crew
Prepare and deliver enrichment activities like puzzle feeders, frozen treats, and training games to keep dogs mentally engaged. -
Strengthen our mission by supporting dogs, mentoring volunteers, and connecting with the community.
• Puppy Care Crew
(Scheduled as needed when litters are on site)
Help keep whelping rooms clean, safe, and stress-free for moms and puppies. Tasks include light cleaning, laundry, and restocking supplies. Training is offered with staff each time a new litter arrives, followed by a shadow shift.• Mentor Program
Pair with new volunteers during their early shifts, answer questions, and help them feel confident in their roles.• Event & Outreach Support
Assist at events, orientations, or community outreach activities. This may include welcoming guests, helping with setup, or sharing about Canines for Change at public events.
Other Ways to Help
In addition to regular shifts, volunteers sometimes step up for special projects or unique needs. This might include:
Bringing in a group of friends or coworkers for a clean-up day
Helping with creative or admin tasks like photos, social media, or organizing materials
Pitching in on seasonal projects like supply drives or enrichment builds
Offering a unique skill or idea you’d like to share
